Description | San Francisco's incumbent District Attorney Terence Hallinan came in first against challengers Bill Fazio and Kamala Harris in his bid for a third term Tuesday, with almost all precincts counted.
The big surprise of the evening, however, was that Harris, a former prosecutor now in the City Attorney's office, made it into the runoff and knocked out Fazio, a former San Francisco who narrowly lost two previous races against Hallinan.
"I'm thrilled,'' said Harris, who was surrounded by cheering supporters at Rasella's jazz club on Fillmore Street. Harris came into the race with the least name recognition, and published polls never showed her above 19 percent.
