DescriptionIs Mike Fahey planning his exit from the Mayor's Office?

Many political insiders seem to think so, and they will find out for sure Tuesday morning.

That's when Fahey will announce whether he will seek re-election for an unprecedented third term as mayor, said his chief of staff, Paul Landow.

The 9:30 a.m. announcement at Hanscom Park will cap months of speculation by those in political circles over what Fahey will do.

"A lot of people have said they would be surprised if he ran again," said Anne Boyle, former chairwoman of the Nebraska Democratic Party. "Achieving a 25-year contract for the College World Series is an incredible accomplishment. How do you top that?"

Going out on top after scoring a major coup by keeping Omaha's signature event here until 2035 could be one incentive for Fahey to walk away from the Mayor's Office.

But there are other tangible signs that Fahey isn't gearing up for another race.

For one thing, Fahey has done no major fundraising, and mayoral campaigns can be costly. Fahey and then-Mayor Hal Daub spent a combined $3 million in the 2001 race. But Fahey began 2008 with just $46,769 in his campaign account, which is less than three members of the City Council had amassed at that time. He hasn't held any campaign fundraisers, either.
