An excerpt...
"Being honored by your peers is perhaps one of the best kudos someone can receive, according to Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta.

Barletta was named Mayor of the Year by the Pennsylvania State Mayors Association this weekend during its yearly convention in Gettysburg. He is the 19th Mayor of the Year crowned by the association.

And it was all a surprise.

Litiz Mayor Russell Pettyjohn, who sits on the association’s convention committee and is chairman of its six-member Mayor of the Year award committee, explained that nominations are received from municipal employees and local elected officials.

Mayor profiles are sent to the selection committee and during a conference call the committee makes nominations.

Barletta was unanimously picked for the award during the first week in July, Pettyjohn said.

Pettyjohn said it is not the first time a mayor was picked unanimously.

Barletta, he said, was selected for the work he is doing in Hazleton. Barletta is a hands-on mayor who has been on location at crime scenes, Pettyjohn said. “He’s willing to put himself on the front lines,” he said.

Barletta has also taken on a national issue, Pettyjohn continued.

“He’s gone one step further to take on immigration,” Pettyjohn said.

“I was very surprised. I didn’t have a clue. … I never expected anything like that,” Barletta said by phone from Gettysburg.

Barletta gave a speech on his experience with the United Nations Advisory Board for Local Authorities. He said that made him realize how fortunate Americans are, especially during one of its meetings in Barcelona, Spain, in 2004, where Mikhail Gorbachev was a main speaker. Barletta said he also gave the mayors association an update on Hazleton’s Illegal Immigration Relief Act proceedings."
