DescriptionThe former mayor of Myrtle Beach abandoned his challenge against Republican U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, saying Tuesday he did not garner the 10,000 votes he needed to get his name on the November ballot.

"I have to congratulate Sen. Graham. He won this round," said Mark McBride.

Voicing his opposition to Graham's support of last year's immigration reform effort, McBride announced his plan in December to challenge the senator for the Republican nomination. In March, just before the $10,158 filing fee was due, McBride announced he would skip the primary and attempt to gather enough signatures to be placed on the general-election ballot.

On Tuesday, the petition deadline, he said he was still receiving mailed-in petitions, but not enough to reach 10,000. He said he doesn't plan to seek write-in votes and no political races appeal to him at present.

In the Republican primary last month, Graham took twice as many votes as his only challenger, Buddy Witherspoon. Now, Graham's only opposition on the ballot will be Democratic nominee Bob Conley, a North Myrtle Beach pilot .

McBride said he probably will not vote for Graham because he still opposes the senator's positions, but said he has yet to consider Conley.
