Description | Jefferson Parish Councilman Byron Lee announced his campaign for the 2nd District congressional seat Wednesday.
A Democrat, Lee won his second term to the Parish Council in October after drawing no opposition. His 3rd District council seat covers parts of Marrero, Avondale, Westwego, south Kenner and Metairie.
Lee said Wednesday that he decided to run for the seat now held by Rep. Bill Jefferson, D-New Orleans, because the district needs better leadership in Washington.
Lee said he would not focus on a strategy that simply touts himself as the sole Jefferson Parish candidate.
"I believe I'll be the best candidate for the entire district," he said. "That's the reality.
"The fact that I'm coming from Jefferson Parish really does not matter that much to me. The reality is that I have a lot of friends and a lot of supporters and families and longtime acquaintances who are looking for someone who they'll feel comfortable with." |
