DescriptionPORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - True, Portland lawyer Steve Novick didn't win the Democratic Senate primary.

But he came awfully close, putting quite a scare into Oregon House Speaker Jeff Merkley, who will challenge Republican incumbent Gordon Smith in the fall.

That's a big accomplishment for a guy who had almost no statewide name ID when he entered the race.

And it's left political insiders wondering what Novick might do for an encore.
