Description | U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono endorsed Sen. Barack Obama for president this morning.
Hirono and the other three members of Hawaii’s congressional delegation are superdelegates to the Democratic national convention in Denver this summer.
Obama already has the support of Rep. Neil Abercrombie. Sen. Daniel Inouye is supporting Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Dan Akaka has said he would not make a commitment until the convention.
Hirono said she made her decision after watching the debates and the campaign.
“I make my announcement with deep respect and admiration for Hillary Clinton,” Hirono said. “She is an extraordinary woman, however, it is time to unite the party behind Sen. Obama."
“All of us in Hawaii are especially proud of Sen. Obama’s deep roots here in our state and overwhelmingly embraced his candidacy in our recent caucus. His love for Hawaii and understanding of its diversity have given him a foundation for understanding the diversity of our country,” Hirono said in a news release from Washington.
Hirono is the 270th superdelegate to endorse Obama, according to the Illinois senator's campaign. Obama is 162 delegates away from securing the Democratic nomination. |
