"Frustrated and angry'' about the opportunities Gov. Blagojevich has "squandered,'' former Chicago Schools CEO Paul Vallas said Monday he would be "open to running again'' for governor.
Despite prodding by reporters after a City Club address about his work with New Orleans schools, Vallas insisted he was not here "laying a foundation'' for a 2010 gubernatorial bid.
"I'd be open to running again, but right now I wouldn't make a decision until after the first of the year,'' said Vallas, whose contract as superintendent of the Recovery District of hurricane-ravaged New Orleans expires in July 2009.
"I'm here to talk about education, not to launch a campaign for governor,'' he said.
Even so, Vallas got in an occasional dig at Blagojevich, who narrowly beat Vallas in Illinois' 2002 Democratic gubernatorial primary.
"While some people have been dodging indictments here, I've been running school districts,'' said Vallas, who also headed the Philadelphia public school system after his unsuccessful gubernatorial run.
Blagojevich has not been charged with any wrongdoing, but his administration has been mired in federal investigations and damaging headlines following the indictment of former Blagojevich fund-raiser Tony Rezko.
With Democrats holding the governor's seat and majorities in both legislative chambers, "You would think that would give you the opportunity to really get things done,'' Vallas said. "There's been a lot of opportunities that have been squandered."
"I think I feel the same way a lot of residents feel. I feel frustrated and angry. Look, I think I could have made a difference. Clearly, I could have gotten along with the Legislature much better.''
