| Description | Three generations of Arizonans know him by his first name. Just "Alfredo." Not "Alfredo who?"
He's a singularly enduring, constantly evolving and complicated public figure, whose political career has spanned parts of five decades, crossing swords with Republicans from Sandra Day O'Connor to Russell Pearce.
Over the years, he's been a student protester, community organizer, legislative leader, businessman-consultant, bon vivant and Democratic gubernatorial candidate.
As an elementary school kid in Miami, they put tape on his mouth for speaking Spanish. He hasn't stopped talking and waving his arms since.
More than 35 years ago, he led a student takeover of the office of the president of Arizona State University and got kicked out. Years later, they awarded him a doctorate.
He marched alongside Cesar Chavez in the '60s and Salvador Reza last month. He campaigned for the Kennedys. He also lists Phelps Dodge, Arco, Fife Symington, Jerry Colangelo, the Colliers, developers DMB and the city of Phoenix as former clients, earning lots of money in the process.
He was one of several young "radicals" who founded Chicanos por la Causa, but has lost interest in the far-flung Latino bureaucracy it has become.
He's had four wives. He lost the great love of his life, Rose Canchola, three years ago, while he was running for governor.
He hasn't left much on the table, racing through life "at full throttle." |
