DescriptionBy Marie Horrigan, CQ Staff

It has been a very good week for Democratic political newcomer Ashwin Madia in his upstart bid to win the key open-seat House race in Minnesota’s 3rd Congressional District.

Madia, an Iraq war veteran, was endorsed by a Democratic Party convention last Saturday over state Sen. Terri Bonoff for the seat retiring nine-term Republican Rep. Jim Ramstad left open in the politically competitive suburban Twin Cities district. Then the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) announced Wednesday that it has added Madia to its short list of candidates who will receive additional financial, strategic and communications assistance for their bids to take over districts currently held by Republican incumbents.

Madia is now enrolled in the DCCC’s “Red to Blue” program, named after the colors now standard on political maps to designate partisan control: red for Republican and blue for Democratic.

State Rep. Erik Paulsen is the sole Republican in the race and is expected to receive his party’s endorsement at its 3rd Congressional District convention in Bloomington coming up on Saturday.

CQ Politics currently rates the race as No Clear Favorite. Democratic strategists have long eyed the 3rd District, contending that Ramstad’s longtime lock on the seat was based on his personal popularity and image as a Republican moderate. District voters favored President Bush by a very modest 51 percent to 48 percent over 2004 Democratic challenger John Kerry , and Democrats say they have made gains there since in state and local elections.
