WASHINGTON - The two Democratic presidential contenders slightly lead John McCain in the dozen states that were closely contested in the 2004 election, a poll showed Thursday.

In separate matchups against the Republican candidate, both Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton led him 47 percent to 43 percent when registered voters in those competitive states were combined, according to the Gallup Poll.

Gallup considered states to be competitive if the 2004 margin of victory for either President Bush or Democratic candidate John Kerry was 5 percentage points or less.

The dozen states where the 2004 margin was close were Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

The figures came from daily Gallup Poll surveys conducted from April 1-15. The telephone interviews included 3,948 registered voters in the states where Bush or Kerry's victory was by 5 points or less. The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 2 percentage points.
