DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Governor Chet Culver paid a surprise visit to Kosovo today. He toured and met with hundreds of Iowa troops in the troubled region. Culver says a multinational peacekeeping force appears to be holding the line.
Culver and Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenti were invited by top Pentagon officials to tour Kosovo. That's in part because the two states have a strong contingent of National Guard troops as part of the peacekeeping effort.
Culver arrived early this morning and helicoptered to the eastern border with Serbia. There, he met with some of the 330 Iowa soldiers stationed in the region.
The threat of violence hangs over that section of Eastern Europe. Kosovo declared its independence on Feb. 17, sparking riots in Serbia and protests from Russia.
Culver has scheduled yet another news conference for early next week to discuss his trip, as well as the crush of business facing the state's legislature in what may be its last week before adjournment. |
