DescriptionWayzata, Minn. (AP) — Iraq War veteran Ashwin Madia has won the Democratic endorsement for Congress in Minnesota's Third Congressional District.

Madia won by acclamation after state Senator Terri Bonoff dropped out late this afternoon at an endorsement convention at Wayzata Central Middle School.

Delegates had gone eight ballots with Madia in the lead, but short of the 60 percent threshold needed for endorsement.

Madia, who worked as an attorney while in Iraq, is promising to end the war and balance the federal budget.

Moderate Republican Jim Ramstad has had a lock on the western Twin Cities-area district for 18 years. But now that Ramstad's retiring, Democrats see an opportunity to take his seat.
