SPRINGFIELD -- State Sen. Mike Jacobs says its time for Gov. Rod Blagojevich to resign.

The East Moline Democrat took reporters aside Wednesday during Senate deliberations and said he was outraged by corruption allegations being made against the governor during the ongoing trial of his fundraiser Tony Rezko.

He added now is the time for Gov. Blagojevich to discuss his involvement with Mr. Rezko in detail with the press or to quit.

"All roads lead to Blagojevich. Illinois is known for corruption, but we have never seen corruption like this before," Sen. Jacobs said.

In response, gubernatorial spokeswoman Abby Ottenhoff said in an emailed statement, "State capitols are known for being full of hot air. That's all this is."

Among the allegations made in the trial was that people were being appointed to state boards in exchange for campaign contributions.

The governor has denied any wrongdoing and no criminal charges have been filed against him.

"What can the governor do to me? Somebody has to speak out," Sen. Jacobs said. "If he is innocent, he should step forward and let the press ask any question about the case. If not, it is time for him to resign. His legal troubles have overshadowed everything else in state government and impeded his ability to get anything done."

Sen. Jacobs said he is entertaining the notion of challenging Gov. Blagojevich if he seeks re-election.

"I'll run -- if nobody else will," he said.
