Description | Mayor Mark Begich was pleased with the outcome of Tuesday night's election with the Assembly shifting to a more liberal makeup.
With 100 percent of precincts reporting some clear winners and losers have emerged from the municipal election. In particular it looks as if the balance of power on the Anchorage Assembly has shifted from its conservatively-minded members to those with more liberal and progressive agendas.
Elvi Gray-Jackson and Mike Gutierrez are former Assembly staffers whose jobs were eliminated in 2005. Both appear to have prevailed against incumbents.
Dan Coffey, the Assembly's current chairman, was among the leadership at the time who sought to cut the positions held by Gray-Jackson and Gutierrez, citing money savings. |
