Description | Former Kansas City Mayor Charles Wheeler is again seeking political office.
He filed Thursday to run for Missouri state treasurer. He’s one of four Democrats running to replace Treasurer Sarah Steelman, who is running for governor.
Wheeler was Kansas City’s mayor from 1971 to 1979. He was elected to the state Senate in 2002 but lost a 2006 bid for Jackson County executive.
Born in 1926, Wheeler has a medical degree from the University of Kansas and a law degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
When asked his inspiration for running for state treasurer, Wheeler said, “I enjoy politics.” Wheeler said that four years in the Senate gave him knowledge of people all over the state and that he had a particular interest in the office of treasurer.
“I think our economy is turning down at a rampant pace,” he said. “I grew up in the days of Herbert Hoover and have a real concern when the economy goes sour like it did in the Depression.” |
