DescriptionI know it's hard to predict how things will shake out this year in Missouri's election cycle. But I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Charles Wheeler will be one of the only candidate with an airport sporting his namesake to run for office.

Wheeler, a former state senator and former mayor of Kansas City, filed to run for the office of state Treasurer today. It comes less than two years after he lost to Mike Sanders in the battle to become Jackson County executive.

It would be an understatement to say that Wheeler is a character. Terry Ganey wrote an article about Wheeler's re-entry into state politics in 2002. Here's a sample:

A forensic pathologist, he first was elected Jackson County coroner in 1964. He got a law degree so he could make a better witness at murder trials.

Compared to those of the deadly dull mayors of other big cities, Wheeler 's tenure was fun. He was known for collecting hundreds of hats. When a new convention came to town, Wheeler would get a new hat. There was that time he wrestled a bear. And there was that flap in 1976 when then-Gov. Christopher "Kit" Bond, a Republican, offhandedly referred to Wheeler as "Crazy Charlie."
