Description | A receptionist told Docking there was a call for her.
"It's the president," the receptionist said.
"The president of what?" Docking said.
"The President of the United States," the receptionist said.
"Tell him to hang on a second," Docking said.
Docking did get to the call, politely informing President Clinton that she -- the 1996 Democratic U.S. Senate candidate from Kansas for the seat vacated by Bob Dole -- was not interested in running again against Republican Sam Brownback.
Recalling the story this week in her third-floor Wichita office at 300 S. Main, Docking laughed, and said, "They said I was the only woman who said 'no' to Bill Clinton."
No 2004 run
And, she confirms, she is declining again as Brownback comes up for re-election next year.
That, despite the fact that the politically astute Docking married into a family whose name reverberates through politics in the Sunflower State.
Her husband, Tom, was Kansas' lieutenant governor from 1983 to 1987. His father, Robert Docking, was governor from 1967 to 1975, and Robert Docking's father, George Docking, was governor from 1957 to 1961.
