An excerpt...
"Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden's National Guard unit has received its "alert order" for possible deployment and the unit's 100 members are now training for their mission, which will probably be to Iraq, the guard said Friday.

The Feb. 1 alert order is the latest step toward Biden's deployment, which would result in the Delaware Department of Justice being without its top law enforcement officer for up to a year.

Biden, who is in the second year of his first four-year term, said the department would run smoothly if he winds up having to serve abroad.

"To the extent that my unit is deployed, I am confident in the ability of my senior leadership to satisfy the Department of Justice's responsibilities to the people of Delaware," Biden said in a statement Friday.

Biden's second-in-command is Richard S. Gebelein, who was attorney general from 1979 to 1983 and sat on the state Superior Court from 1983 until 2005.

By March 15, the Army could send a mobilization order to Biden's unit -- the 261st Signal Brigade -- that would finalize the decision on whether to deploy the unit, Delaware National Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Len Gratteri said.

"The mobilization order tells us who from the unit is going, where they are going to go and when they are going to go," he said.

There remains a chance that Biden wouldn't be one of the members of his unit that would go or the unit itself could wind up not being deployed at all."
