Description | Iowa Gov. Chet Culver has endorsed Barack Obama for president.
Culver will officially announce his support for the Illinois senator’s presidential bid during a rally tonight in Omaha.
“I’m doing so because I believe it’s clear that the American people are hungry for change,” Culver said in an interview with The Des Moines Register. “I believe they’re looking for a president to push back on the special interests and I think it’s also time for a fresh new approach to governing in Washington, D.C. and believe senator Obama represents this new approach.”
Obama won the Jan. 3 Iowa Democratic caucuses, ahead of New York Sen. Hillary Clinton and former North Carolina senator John Edwards.
The win had a ripple effect on Obama’s campaign. In recent weeks, his national support has surged and he has been able to aggressively compete with Clinton, who was once ahead in some national polls by more than 30 points.
Culver, who has been governor of Iowa for about 14 months, said today that he purposely waited to endorse Obama because he wanted Iowans to speak first.
“I think Iowans have spoken loudly and clearly in the Iowa caucuses and now the campaign will come into a new phase,” Culver said.
Culver's wife, Mari Culver, endorsed John Edwards during the caucus campaign.
