Description | Three Republicans are vying next week to try to succeed retiring longtime U.S. Rep. Jerry Weller, but the winner will have to deal with a strong Democratic push to wrest away the seat.
The victor in Tuesday’s GOP primary will square off in the fall against state Senate Majority Leader Debbie Halvorson of Crete, who is unopposed in the Democratic primary. She has stockpiled more than four times as much campaign cash as her nearest Republican rival, New Lenox Mayor Tim Baldermann.
Based on Halvorson’s fundraising, her electoral track record and the circumstances of Weller’s departure, national Republicans are attacking her as if she were an incumbent, not a Democrat running in what has been GOP territory.
“Debbie Halvorson is a flawed candidate and a career politician whose name has become synonymous with Gov. Blagojevich’s misdeeds in Springfield,” said Ken Spain, a spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee.
Halvorson sought to distance herself from Rod Blagojevich, even as she serves as the top lieutenant to Democratic Senate President Emil Jones, the governor’s key ally.
“I’ve been against most of the things [Blagojevich] has done,” she said, noting her opposition to the recent sales-tax increase for public transit because it wasn’t paired with a bill to fund a statewide construction program. “Luckily, the voters are very, very smart, and they know me better than that.” |
