Description | Kathleen Blanco's out of the Gov.'s Mansion and writing a book in Lafayette, but she'll continue to get a paycheck from the state, retirement pay estimated to give her about two-thirds of the salary she collected as governor each year.
The former governor is expected to receive more than $65,000 annually in retirement pay from the Louisiana State Employees' Retirement System for the rest of her life. In office, Blanco earned $95,000 a year as governor.
"I've earned it more than any of the other folks I know," Blanco said of her retirement benefits, chuckling and referencing her time in office during the worst natural disasters in the state's history, hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005.
The monthly $5,453 in estimated retirement benefits from the state were calculated based on Blanco's nearly 24 years in elected office, during which time she paid into the retirement system, according to information provided by Steve Stark, deputy general counsel of LASERS. The figures will change slightly when her final retirement benefits are calculated, he said.
