DescriptionAUSTIN -- Call this Gene Kelly the invisible dancer.

This Gene Kelly is a retired Air Force officer from the San Antonio suburbs who has been running for public office on and off for the better part of two decades. He's never come close to winning.

But he's been nominated a couple of times, even though his footprints are seldom found on the campaign trail.

Just before Christmas, Kelly, 81, officially entered the Democratic U.S. Senate primary.

One former party official called his candidacy a "joke," but one of his former opponents warned that Kelly could waltz off a winner in the primary.

Barbara Radnofsky, who won the 2006 Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in a runoff with Kelly, said voters must be reminded that the candidate is not the guy who starred in Singin' in the Rain some 55 years ago.

That Gene Kelly died in 1996.

"You've got to reach those Democratic primary voters and tell them not to vote for somebody just because they have a familiar name," said Radnofsky, a Houston lawyer whose campaign sent mailers during her runoff with Kelly bearing the message "the dancer is dead."
