DescriptionAlready-stalled Democratic efforts to find a viable candidate to challenge Republican U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee may have gotten a lot harder today.

Alexander announced that 30 prominent Tennessee Democrats and independents, including Mayors Willie Herenton and A C Wharton, have endorsed his re-election to a second six-year term.

Running up a big Democratic vote in Memphis is essential for any Democrat to win a statewide race in Tennessee and the backing of the city’s top two African-American officials for Alexander signals the difficulty a Democratic challenger will have.

In addition to Herenton, who endorsed Alexander’s initial Senate run in 2002, and Wharton, the list includes:

Bishop William H. Graves of Memphis, senior bishop of the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church.

Franklin Haney, Chattanooga developer and one-time Democratic gubernatorial candidate.

State Sen. Douglas Henry, D-Nashville.

Frances Hooks of Memphis, wife of Dr. Benjamin Hooks, former executive director of the NAACP.

Carmichael Johnson, Memphis realtor.

Cato Johnson, Memphis hospital executive.

Dr. Joe Johnson, former president of the University of Tennessee.

Johnny Majors, former head football coach at the University of Tennessee.

Clayton McWhorter, Nashville businessman.
