Description | SANTA FE (AP) - Governor Richardson is asking legislators to approve domestic partnerships to give certain unmarried couples the same rights and benefits as married couples.
He says New Mexico's strength is its diversity, and discrimination cannot be accepted in any form.
But Republican lawmakers are criticizing the proposal, calling it divisive.
House GOP Whip Dan Foley of Roswell suggests that the highly charged legislation be left for late in the 30-day legislative session.
But Democratic House Speaker Ben Lujan of Santa Fe says he intends to act swiftly on the measure. |
