McCaskill: Obama ready to be president on day one

| Description | Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill didn't endorse Barack Obama for president today.
But she said some very nice things about him in a meeting with The Star's editorial board.

The freshman Illinois senator is ready to be president right out of the gate, despite suggestions from rival Democrat Hillary Clinton that he may not be.
"I absolutely do," McCaskill said.
Obama, she said, would be a "terrific president." He's a "wise soul" who became editor of the Harvard Law Review not because he is black, but through a blind application process.
An example of his prowess: Despite enormous pressure from advisers, Obama held off going negative on Hillary Clinton weeks ago when he trailed the former first lady by 20 points in the polls. He determined that he wanted to win his way.
"I think that's a really good sign," she said.
McCaskill said she was surprised by the rapidity of Clinton's fall from atop national preference polls. Former President Bill Clinton is an asset to her, but he doesn't represent new beginnings.
"People do want to turn the page," McCaskill said.
Clinton has to win the Florida and California primaries, the senator said. "If she loses either one, it's over."
Clinton, McCaskill added, "is in a very tough position."
Oh, McCaskill, who has said she won't endorse in the race, declined to address that issue today -- a sign she might be shifting. Democratic Party insiders have long said that she favors Obama.
