Description | Clear your throat, tune your inner orchestra for "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and sing along with this:
Good riddance, Rod Blagojevich
Your Elvis look's inane
The Senate's mad, so's Lisa's dad
You drive us all insane
Our transit's broke, the state's a joke
The Tollway's one big pain
Oh, tidings of comfort and joy,
Save Illinois!
Oh, tidings of comfort and joy.
That's a verse from a new holiday classic composed by John McHugh of Green Oaks. He was a winner in the contest Eric Zorn and I staged as part of our ninth annual Songs of Good Cheer singalongs, held Friday and Saturday at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music.
Our second winner was Cynthia Ward of Naperville. Here's a verse from her instant classic, to the tune of "O Christmas Tree":
I'm Hillary, so vote for me
With blind anticipation.
Don't pick on me, don't pile on me,
Don't block the coronation.
The assignment was to compose political lyrics to a familiar holiday tune, and contestants responded with bipartisan vigor.
We received parodies involving former governor George Ryan ("Away in a prison, a bunk for a bed") and Cook County Board President Todd Stroger ("Away with the toddler, no brain in his head"). |
