Just as Maryland slips into the year’s darkest days, the state’s solar industry may be awakening to its brightest morning.

In January, new provisions of the state’s renewable energy requirements will take effect, adding to existing state incentives for businesses and residents to go solar.
The new provisions also join existing state installation grants and federal and county tax incentives, said Malcolm D. Woolf, director of the Maryland Energy Administration.

The new state laws make Maryland one of the nation’s largest markets for solar energy, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association.

In April, the state revised its 2004 renewable energy legislation to require a portion of sales by electric utilities and competitive retail suppliers to come from renewable energy sources.

The new provisions ‘‘will thrust the state into the vanguard of alternative energy,” predicted Mark D. Crowdis, president of consultants Think Energy Inc.
