DescriptionNov. 5 -- Even though he was under indictment on bribery charges and up for reelection in a district where Democrats greatly outnumber Republicans, State Sen.Guy J. Velella, chair of the Bronx Republican Party, secured his ninth term with 67 percent of the vote in Tuesday's elections, according to early returns.

With all these vulnerabilities, Bronx Democrats might have knocked the eight-term incumbent out of the legislative ring and narrowed the Republicans' 11-seat advantage in the Senate. Instead, the Democrats put up a weak challenger with little money and name recognition, and their candidate, Democratic District Leader Fran Mahony, suffered a quiet defeat on Tuesday.

With 79 percent of district precincts reporting, Velella led Mahony 24,550 to 11,857.

Mahony never had a chance, political consultants and Democratic leaders said last week. At the time of the most recent state campaign finance filings on Oct. 21, she had raised only $6,750 to Velella's $650,000. She also refused to bring up Velella's alleged indiscretions.

"People are tired of hearing the negative talk in campaigns," Mahony said.
