Lieberman, an independent, has been among the strongest Iraq war supporters in Congress. McCain's support of the U.S. troop surge in Iraq is a central theme of his White House bid. He had long called for sending in more troops, an idea President Bush embraced earlier this year.
McCain is a former Navy pilot and Vietnam prisoner of war. Lieberman's war support cost him the 2006 Senate Democratic primary in Connecticut, but he ran as an independent to win re-election.
