| Description | Thursday night's debate proved to be a split-screen event: at times the liveliest of the four encounters the candidates have had since Labor Day; at other times a tame and generalized discussion of the plight of small-business owners, immigration changes, the need for prescription drug benefits and the role of labor unions.
The rough treatment Clark received here contrasted with the rather gentle welcome he got two weeks ago when the candidates debated in New York, and it signaled that former Vermont governor Howard Dean is not the only non-Washington upstart candidate who worries others in the race.
Clark, who jumped into the presidential race three weeks ago and has risen to the top of the field in some national polls, tried to stand his ground during the 90-minute debate, asserting that he always opposed the president's decision to go to war, and accused his critics of getting their facts wrong... |
