Shields, Cardarella acquitted in mortgage-fraud trial; two others convicted

| Description | After a grueling two-week trial and marathon deliberations, a federal jury acquitted Katheryn Shields and her husband of mortgage fraud-related charges Wednesday.
The words “not guilty” barely were out of U.S. District Judge Fernando Gaitan’s mouth when Shields, the former Jackson County executive, stood and embraced attorney Curtis Woods.
Her husband, Philip Cardarella, pitched back in his seat, looked to the ceiling and dabbed tears from his eyes.
When indicted in January, Shields and Cardarella categorized the case against them as baseless and politically motivated.
Speaking on the courthouse steps after the verdicts, both praised the jurors. Cardarella said they showed a lot of courage “to stand up and tell the federal government they’re wrong.”
“Imagine the sort of toll it takes on your family to be falsely accused of a crime,” he said. “It’s a horrible thing for a person to go through.” |
