DescriptionU.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens today rejected former Gov. George Ryan's long-shot bid to remain free on bail while he fights to overturn his corruption conviction, meaning he must report to federal prison by 5 p.m. Wednesday to begin serving his 6½-year sentence.

Prosecutors and defense lawyers traded final shots Monday over whether the U.S. Supreme Court should grant former Gov. George Ryan's long-shot bid to remain free while he appeals his corruption conviction.

In a 32-page brief, U.S. Solicitor General Paul Clement argued that Ryan's own lawyers either caused or failed to promptly complain about many of the alleged "errors" in his trial.
