Description | OTTAWA — The federal Conservatives have decided that 21 months as “Canada’s New Government” is long enough, and dropped the term as of last night’s Throne Speech.
“We’ve reached puberty,” joked Tim Powers, a Conservative strategist.
Since winning the January, 2006, election, Stephen Harper’s Tories have branded themselves “Canada’s New Government” as a way of signalling change from years of Liberal rule.
The phrase was used in speeches, documents and press releases — from funding announcements to a declaration of support for reducing trans fats to the introduction of the Federal Accountability Act. Communications officials regularly issued releases with announcements such as: “Canada’s New Government Activates the Atlantic Tsunami Warning System.”
The phrase grated on some, particularly in Ottawa, where political watchers questioned how long “Canada’s New Government” could claim to be new. It became the source of jokes, including within Tory circles where there was widespread agreement it was time to stop using the line.
“It was becoming a bit of an in-house joke so obvious to all,” noted one insider. |
