Description | In what has become something of a routine move, Democratic leaders attempted to distance themselves from controversial remarks made by 18-term Rep. Pete Stark (D-Calif.)
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) late Friday issued a statement condemning Stark's controversial language during the debate before Thursday's failed vote to override President Bush's veto of a bill to expand the state Children's Health Insurance Program.
Pelosi, conceding that the debate "was heated on both sides," singled out Stark for criticism: "While Members of Congress are passionate about their views, what Congressman Stark said during the debate was inappropriate and distracted from the seriousness of the subject at hand -- providing health care for America's children." |
