DescriptionTORONTO — John Tory discovered a sign for his Liberal rival planted on the lawn of his childhood home while canvassing in his own riding on Sunday.

The Progressive Conservative leader is vying for a seat in the riding of Don Valley West, which is currently represented by Kathleen Wynne, the Liberal Education Minister.

The race has proven tough for Mr. Tory. A poll released last week of 333 residents suggested 52% of voters support Ms. Wynne while just 37% intend to back the Conservative leader.

With days left in the election, Mr. Tory has spent considerable time in his riding, something that is both unusual for a party leader and a testament to the stiff competition he faces.

While canvassing on Sunday in the neighbourhood of Lawrence Park, Mr. Tory arrived at the house owned by his family during the first six years of his life. Embedded in the front lawn of the brown brick, ivy-covered home was a bright red Liberal sign.
