DescriptionUpset with rumors and stories that House Minority Leader John Boehner and National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Tom Cole are at odds over fixing the plight of the party's 2008 election operation, top GOP strategists with ties to the White House are urging a truce.

"We need to stop barking at each other and get this done," said one strategist. News reports have suggested that Boehner is upset with Cole's strategy and is demanding a major shakeup at NRCC. But another strategist said that the panic is coming too soon and that "the issue isn't over who's the better chief of staff. Just let Cole do his thing for a while and let's see where it stands in a few months."

Cole said in an interview that he expects the GOP to be competitive in the 2008 elections and also that the Republicans should win back many of the Republican seats lost to Democrats in 2006. Party officials also said that once the presidential nominee is picked, there will be a mood shift in the GOP and that the prospects for staying even or actually picking up seats will be boosted. One strategist compared the situation to the 2006 fight between the House Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the Democratic National Committee over spending, a situation that eventually turned bright for the party as fundraising poured in at the end of the election year.
