Description | Former state Senate President Ken Bennett won't run for the congressional seat held by embattled Rep. Rick Renzi.
Bennett had been considered one of the GOP frontrunners to succeed Renzi, who is being investigated by the feds and isn't seeking re-election.
The following is excerpted from a letter that Bennett, a Prescott Republican, released today:
"After much consideration, Jeanne and I have decided that now is not the time for me to seek election to Congress. Let me be clear, I have not retired from public service. Arizona faces significant challenges, and I will continue to be a part of developing solutions that will move our state forward. I love Arizona. I was born here, we've raised our family here, and I'm committed to helping shape its future."
...
As for Bennett, he told The Insider that he's weighing a gubernatorial run in 2010. Gov. Janet Napolitano will be term-limited out of office that year.
"The governor's seat is what I'm looking at pretty seriously," Bennett said. "I'm just keeping that as a possibility." |
