Description | State Sen. Kay Hagan said she will decide "sooner rather than later" whether to run for the U.S. Senate seat held by Republican Elizabeth Dole.
Hagan said Tuesday she is considering a run and believes the Dole can be defeated.
"I guarantee you, I wouldn't be thinking about this if I didn't think she was," Hagan said. "She's definitely vulnerable."
Hagan, D-Guilford, wouldn't talk about the possibility while the General Assembly was in session, saying she needed to focus on finalizing the state budget as one of the Senate's three chief budget-writers. The session adjourned last month.
Hagan, an attorney, is one of three Democrats considering a U.S. Senate run. State Rep. Grier Martin, D-Wake, and Forsyth County Commissioner and former state senator Ted Kaplan also are thinking about challenging Dole.
Democrats have struggled to find someone to take on Dole. Democratic Gov. Mike Easley, who is barred from running for a third term as governor, isn't interested, and U.S. Rep. Brad Miller said in June that he wouldn't challenge Dole.
