DescriptionGov. Kathleen Blanco is scheduled to testify Tuesday in the negligent homicide trial of the owners of St. Rita’s nursing home.

The governor will be called as a witness for the state, which is prosecuting Salvador and Mabel Mangano in the deaths of 35 nursing home patients in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

The Manganos’ attorneys had subpoenaed Blanco and wanted her to testify about the orders she gave concerning evacuations of the New Orleans area, including St. Bernard Parish, where the home was located.

The trial was moved to St. Francisville in order to seat an impartial jury.

By the state preemptively calling the governor as a witness, prosecutors will get the opportunity to question her first.
