DescriptionWilmington News Journal article.

An excerpt...
"Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden is preparing to don his National Guard uniform and head to Iraq next year, potentially leaving the state Department of Justice in someone else's hands for 12 months.

At a campaign stop in Iowa Wednesday, U.S. Sen. Joe Biden, Beau's father, noted that his son's unit -- the 261st Signal Brigade -- has been placed on alert for an Iraq deployment sometime next year.

The brigade specializes in setting up communications and Biden serves as a captain and a Judge Advocate General's Corp officer -- a military lawyer.

"I don't want him going," said the elder Biden, a Democratic presidential candidate. "But I tell you what, I don't want my grandson or my granddaughters going back in 15 years, and so how we leave makes a big difference."

Beau Biden, who was at his father's side in Iowa on Wednesday, has not been assigned a deployment date. Lt. Col. Len Gratteri, a Delaware National Guard spokesman, was careful to say Biden's deployment, possibly by late 2008, was "more than likely to happen," though was "not a definite yet."

Still, a deployment overseas for the younger Biden would disrupt his first tenure in elected office.

Beau Biden refused to comment extensively.

"If I am called up, I have great confidence in the leadership team I have assembled at the Delaware Department of Justice," he said in a telephone interview.

Biden said he would not seek an exemption from service because of his responsibilities as the state's top law enforcement officer."
