Description | Quebec federal Cabinet ministers Michael Fortier and Maxime Bernier are rumoured to be future federal Conservative leadership contenders, but Sen. Fortier's office last week denied the rumour and other Conservatives say Mr. Bernier is much better placed for any future run.
By most accounts Public Works Minister and Quebec Sen. Fortier is "a smart man," "a straight shooter," and "very personable." While political Ottawa is touting the business savvy lawyer, who was appointed to represent the Montreal region, as the next Conservative Party leader to succeed Prime Minister Stephen Harper (Calgary Southwest, Alta.), those who know him say he's "far too loyal" for that.
Leadership ambitions are just bad speculation, said Sen. Fortier's communications director Jacques Gagnon last week in an interview with The Hill Times.
"Let's put it this way," Mr. Gagnon said. "Prime Minister Harper is there to stay. There's absolutely no objective of the leadership of the party. Mr. Fortier is far too loyal to even think about this." |
