DescriptionA heated argument between two San Francisco supervisors nearly turned into a physical altercation in the Board of Supervisors chamber during a meeting that went late into the night Tuesday.

Supervisors Bevan Dufty and Chris Daly had traded verbal jabs at each other throughout the meeting, which lasted nearly nine hours. Near the end of the night, Daly approached Dufty's desk in the chamber and the two began arguing, according to supervisors who were present in the nearly empty chamber.

Dufty said Wednesday that he told Daly he was acting like a "third-grade bully" and then challenged Daly by saying, "Why don't you just do what you want to do? Why don't you just punch me in the face?"

Daly bristled at the suggestion and responded by saying, "How dare you -- I'm not a bully," before board President Aaron Peskin got between the two and physically pulled Daly away from the argument, according to supervisors at the meeting.

"It felt threatening, and it felt like people definitely needed to step back and cool off," said Supervisor Tom Ammiano, who was seated next to Dufty during the exchange.
