DescriptionCalifornia State Assemblywoman Laura Richardson (D) defeated state Sen. Jenny Oropeza (D) by a larger-than-expected margin late Tuesday in a special election to fill the late Rep. Juanita Millender-McDonald’s seat.

Richardson garnered almost 38 percent of the vote to Oropeza’s 31 percent in a race with 17 names on the ballot.

Because Richardson failed to get more than 50 percent of the vote, she’ll face Republican John Kanaley in an Aug. 21 runoff.

But because of the district’s reliably Democratic lean, Richardson is expected to win handily. Kanaley won just more than 7 percent of the vote yesterday.
