Description | FORT SASKATCHEWAN, ALTA. — Less than two weeks after suffering a humiliating political defeat in Calgary, Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach has given that city a stronger and larger role in his rural-heavy cabinet.
Since taking over from former premier Ralph Klein in December, Calgary has increasingly been a political headache for Mr. Stelmach's young government, especially after his original cabinet was appointed and was light in Calgary representation.
The city's discontent with the Tory party, which has governed Alberta for 36 years, boiled over on June 12 when a Liberal candidate won Mr. Klein's former Calgary riding in a by-election. The Tories had held the seat since 1971.
Mr. Stelmach said the cabinet changes were a “response to what I've been hearing from Albertans over the last number of months.” During a brief and hastily organized news conference in Fort Saskatchewan, a small city northeast of Edmonton that is located in Mr. Stelmach's riding, the Premier said he didn't do it sooner because he wanted to avoid making a “knee-jerk reaction.” |
