Description | The head of the Illinois State Chamber of Commerce is raising the possibility of a temporary increase in the state income tax. Repeating remarks first reported in Springfield's State Journal-Register newspaper, chamber President and CEO Douglas Whitley says he fears that Gov. Rod Blagojevich next year will move again to balance the state budget not by cutting spending but by boosting fees and other charges on business. If so, an income tax hike would be more "predictable and stable" from a cost perspective, and would fall more heavily on individuals than businesses, Mr. Whitley says. The chamber "has not taken a position (on an income tax hike). It's premature," he adds. |
