Description | DISTRICT 3
Joseph Hernandez
This runoff features two well-qualified candidates – Joseph Hernandez and Dave Neumann. Their credentials and professional demeanor convinced us to abandon standard practice and recommend both men in the first round of this political battle.
Now, voters must make a tough choice between the two in the runoff. We give a narrow edge in this race to Mr. Hernandez. His community activism, which includes serving as president of both the Fort Worth Avenue Development Group and the Wynnewood North Neighborhood Association, should assure voters that Mr. Hernandez is attuned to the district's needs.
Mr. Hernandez, 37, who works as a community development manager for a bank, also gained valuable experience on the Landmark Commission, and he would bring a balanced approach to encouraging new development in the district while preserving neighborhoods' history. He lives outside of this district's traditional power base in North Oak Cliff, so he will bring a different perspective than many of his predecessors.
Mr. Neumann, a 47-year-old CEO of an apparel manufacturer, distinguished himself on the City Plan Commission and has a firm grasp of local issues. He is a consensus builder who has much to offer, but Mr. Hernandez's leadership skills are better suited to the council.
We lament that two top-tier candidates are running against each other in this race. Voters have two good options, but Mr. Hernandez gets our recommendation. |
