MACKINAC ISLAND -- Gov. Jennifer Granholm on Friday endorsed benefit concessions by teachers and public employees, to relieve huge legacy costs faced by schools and local governments.

And she broadly hinted that she'll call a special session of the Legislature if lawmakers leave Lansing for summer vacation before resolving next year's budget deficit.

"Let's insist that nobody goes on summer vacation until we get it done," she told Michigan's business and political leaders at the final day of the Greater Detroit Chamber's annual leadership conference at the Grand Hotel.

"The governor has the ability to call a special session of the Legislature if they don't get it done."

It's going to be a tough budget process because lawmakers will be asked to approve cuts, reforms and a tax hike that will be hard for many to swallow. But the governor's remarks raised the hackles of Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop, R-Rochester, who said he's always been committed to doing whatever it takes to finish the job.

"The Legislature has been making progress and will continue to do so without the need for threats from the governor," said his press secretary, Matt Marsden. "There's never been any indication on the majority leader's part he was going to leave early."
