Three state legislators are looking to select the best location for a Wareham commuter rail station along the proposed rail line extension between Middleboro-Lakeville and Buzzards Bay.
"We're doing this because we want to hear from the public at the absolute earliest stages" of the project, said Rep. William M. Straus, D- Mattapoisett.
He is working with Sen. Marc R. Pacheco, D-Taunton, and Rep. Susan Williams Gifford, R-Wareham, to assess siting for the station and gather public input.
They plan to organize an informal panel and schedule a series of public meetings beginning in mid-June.
"Our goal is to actually find out from people who are most affected and who will use this (to tell us) what they feel about it," Rep. Straus said. "The station location will determine a lot of growth issues for several decades out."
In February, the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization released a study of the proposed commuter rail extension. The study concluded that restoring rail service to Wareham and Buzzards Bay was feasible, though costly.
The study proposed two possible locations for the Wareham station, but the legislators say they are open to other sites.
"The first thing we'll do is pull out a map ... and look at what properties abut the line," Rep. Straus said. |
