A self-made millionaire physicist from Geneva will run as a Democrat next year for former Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert’s seat.
Bill Foster, 51, a political newcomer, is a former Fermilab physicist with a doctorate from Harvard University. His priorities are bringing the troops home from Iraq and cutting the national debt.
“A lot of the challenges that our country faces are economic and technical, and as a scientist and businessman, I can help solve them,” Foster told the Daily Herald on Wednesday.
Foster’s foray sets up a potential primary with Democratic state Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia. The Aurora lawmaker has filed to run.
It’s unclear, however, whether Chapa LaVia will give up her seat in Springfield to run for Congress. That’ll depend on whether Hastert steps down early — requiring a special election be held — or simply decides not to seek another term.
Also in the race are Jonathan Laesch, a former military intelligence officer who lost to Hastert in November, and Jotham Stein, a St. Charles lawyer. |
